If you had two days to spare...
Unfortunately, none of us really have two days to spare. We’re so busy that we never get to sharpen the old saw. But we know we should, right? So, this year, let’s do it.
In our book, Influencer, we talk about the power of deliberate practice. Perfect practice makes perfect—in less time than you might think. Two days of deliberate practice is enough time to master—or at least to begin to master—some truly life-changing skills. Here are a few ideas you might want to consider…
We, at VitalSmarts, offer two-day workshops in Crucial Conversations and Crucial Confrontations. Thousands of people participate in these workshops and testify that their lives are changed.
Dr. Howard Markman, the leading expert on making marriages work, offers two-day workshops for couples. They are guaranteed to be fun and useful. His track record for turning around unhappy relationships is unmatched.
The Iowa Writers’ Workshop, probably the most famous and effective in the nation, offers weekend—as well as week-long—workshops for writers of all skill levels. If you were a better writer how would it improve your career?
Want to change your fitness trajectory or train to actually win a race? Why not sign up for a two-day camp with Chris Carmichael, Lance Armstrong’s coach. He offers camps in Tucson and Asheville.
How about something that’s just plain fun. For me and my wife it was surf camp. We organized our own, since we were bringing scads of nieces and nephews with us, but there are a lot of great providers. Check out SurfCamp.com to schedule a weekend of fun and a heck of a workout this summer. My last idea… Spend the weekend learning to unicycle. It takes about 10 hours of deliberate practice. Then join me, my wife, and several of our nephews in Moab, Utah the last weekend in March. There will be about 300 of us riding the SlickRock Trail at the Moab Munifest.
I'd love to hear what deliberate practice you have done, or plan to do, this year that will lead to new skills and profoundly new experiences to sharpen the old saw
